RFID - A surge in orders. By Dr Peter Harrop, Chairman, IDTechEx - As forecasted by IDTechEx in RFID Forecasts, Players, Opportunities 2009-2019, there has been a surge in orders for RFID in 2009. Despite the world's largest RFID project, the $6 billion China National ID card scheme, being completed a year earlier and now being just at replacement level, the global RFID market is rising 5% this year to $5.56 billion. This is in the face of the global financial meltdown which has caused some car production, for example, to plummet by 50%. In many applicational sectors, RFID orders are up 10%. Primarily this is driven by governments doing two things. Increasingly, they make it a legal requirement to fit RFID, recent examples being dogs in New Zealand and four legged livestock other than cows in Europe. Secondly they come up with huge sums of money to buy RFID. This varies from local governments committing to non-stop road tolling and library tagging to national governments increasingly buying military, fish monitoring, national ID card, passport and oth By Nigel Rix (01/07/09) ... more

Barcode is 35 years old today - 26th June By Thomas McDonald for The New York Times - The bar code has become much more than since it was first used to read the price on a 10-pack of Juicy Fruit gum (67 cents) on the morning of June 26, 1974. Now they are used to board airplanes and track packages. Bar codes help people with diabetes calibrate glucose meters and researchers study the pollination habits of bees. They inspired a hand-held video game, Barcode Battler, in 1991. They even played a role in the 1992 presidential race, when then-President George H. W. Bush, at a campaign stop, seemed surprised by what had already become a technological staple of everyday life. By Nigel Rix (26/06/09) ... more

 Overview of current competitions

The new SBRI programme aims to use government procurement to drive innovation. It provides business opportunities for innovative companies whilst solving the needs of government departments.

Competitions for new technologies and ideas are run in specific areas and aim to engage a broad range of companies in short-term development contracts.

SBRI enables government departments and public sector organisations to procure new technologies faster and with managed risk through a phased development programme, and it provides paid contracts for the critical stage of product development.
