Square Kilometre Array Conference - An Industry perspective - 16th September - The Square Kilometre Array is an international project to design and build the next generation of radio telescope. With unmatched improvements in speed and sensitivity it will enable new discoveries and test some of the fundamental theories of cosmology. As complex as the LHC, over 3,000 Kms across and producing as much data as the whole of the internet of 2020 it represents a major challenge for scientists, engineers and manufacturers. With clear advantages for academics and scientists - What will industry gain from this project? This conference will bring together the designers, academics and users of the SKA with the companies that hope to benefit from the investment of 1.5 Billion Euros - benefits coming from either direct contracts or from the spin-out technologies that will developed. Background

More than 30% of Europe's fabless semiconductor companies and independent design houses are located in the UK, so it's no surprise that some are world leaders. It’s also no surprise to find that many of these companies were founded in the UK and have chosen to remain headquartered here because their value and strength is in the expertise of their staff and UK engineers have skills which are not easy to find in other places.

We are a nation of innovators, we have great expertise in analogue design, wireless and digital signal processing. We build chips on leading edge processes (like TSMC’s 40nm process). We have been pioneers of mixed signal on cmos technology and now we’re amongst the world leaders in the field of innovative display technology and plastic electronics.

Many of the technologies being developed by these UK companies are behind some of the “killer products” on the market today. Iconic products like the Apple iPad and iPhone, TomTom satnavs, Palm Pre, Samsung Omnia HD smartphone, and many others, have used technologies from UK companies like ARM, Imagination Technologies, CSR, Wolfson Microelectronics, Icera as their vital components

We need the world to recognise that we’re building globally competitive businesses and that these UK companies are working on a global basis to capture significant parts of the value chain in the global Consumer Electronics market.

UK Technology at CES 2010

The Electronics KTN recently supported a UKTI mission to the USA to showcase UK Technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Focusing on the mantra of “UK Technology – the Vital Component”, our aim was to demonstrate the wealth of technology from the UK that is behind many of today’s “killer” products.

The UK Technology stand at CES featured a selection of thought leadership presentations, demos and information about the UK technology sector. This “Best of British” event brings many of those companies that were involved in CES 2010 to a UK audience.
