Natural language programming of semi-autonomous and embedded system? - Use of natural languages for computer interfacing has often poped up in articles during the past two decades. The approach has been dogged by the limited vocabulary, misunderstadnings and marginal practical industrial benefits. Cost savings are still being made at automated call cetres. This article looks at a different story, that of programming computers in English. During its history, computer programming went through a journey from machine level code to languages such as Pascal, C and then object oriented ones such C++, Java, etc. For numerical computing and simulation higher languages such as MATLAB, Octave or SicLab are used. Can we go furher? And if we do, what is the next level of programming from object oriented programming? This article investigates these questions and finds some interesting answers. Open Source for Hardware? - This article explores how an open source business model, widely used now in software development, can be applied to hardware development. It discusses the need for an open source licensing framework suited to hardware designs. By Jeremy Bennett (03/06/09) ... more
Are there too many constraints on modern electronics design? - An interesting panel meeting will be held at the UK Design Innovation Conference during National Electronics Week in June. The theme for the debate will be “Are there too many constraints on modern electronics design?” and will bring together the views of UK electronics industry champions in a lively discussion designed to focus thought and provoke action. The debate will seek to: ? understand the current state of the industry ? define what a constraint is and how to address it ? promote the UK as a location for investment ? encourage the spread of best practice ? discuss how the perpetual demand for electronics related design skills can be addressed By Philip Mayo (02/06/09) ... more
SBRI - Government Challenges; Ideas from Business; Innovative Solutions......and contracts! - The SBRI programme aims to use government procurement to drive innovation. It is particularly suitable for SME and early stage businesses and gives vital funding for the critical stage of product development. It provides business opportunities for innovative companies whilst solving the needs of government departments. Competitions for new technologies and ideas are run in specific areas and aim to engage a broad range of companies in short-term development contracts. SBRI enables government departments and public sector organisations to procure new technologies faster and with managed risk through a phased development programme, and it provides paid contracts for the critical stage of product development. The Electronics KTN has identified Embedded Systems as one of our key knowledge transfer themes. The embedded systems community is a very widespread and diverse community, spread throughout the UK in a wide range of different market sectors. Traditionally, this community has not been well represented

We strongly believe that bringing members of this community together to network with each other will strengthen the community, and lead to innovation and growth. Our aim is to provide regular opportunities for members of this community to meet, learn about new technologies and tools and share ideas and best practices.

With these objectives in mind we are developing a full programme of events for the Embedded Software theme, “Silicon Meets Software” .

Silicon Meets Software Event ProgrammeDownload a draft of our Silicon Meets Software event programme. This event programme will be rolled out in our Electronics KTN events calendar in due course.

If you would be interested in presenting at one of these events, if you have a suggestion for a new event or if you would like Electronics KTN to participate in your event please send an email to embedded@electronics-ktn.com with the details of your suggestion
