North West Aerospace Alliance - Developing the Autonomous Systems Supply Chain
by Guy Horsley (14 May 2010)
The NWAA is delivering the Aerospace Supply Chain Excellence Programme (ASCE2). A key part of the programme is a focus on Commodity Groups based on existing regional strengths. One of the groups is concerned with developing the supply chain for Autonomous Systems.
The North West Aerospace Alliance has been contracted to deliver the Aerospace Supply Chain Excellence Programme (ASCE2) with the North West Development Agency (NWDA).
The contract is backed by £7m of funding from the NWDA and the European Regional Development Fund. It also has strong industry support and backing from the key aerospace customers in the region, notably BAE Systems, Airbus and Rolls Royce, as well as working closely with 45 strategic Northwest aerospace suppliers. The ASCE2 programme will deliver a “world-class” aerospace supply chain in the Northwest of England by focussing on developing capability and performance and by establishing a wider enterprise of companies and organisations. The project has 5 specific themes which will focus on Commodity Groups, Skills, Innovation, Shared Services and the creation of Extended Enterprises. Much of the work is focussed on Commodity Groups which have been selected based on existing expertise within the region and mapped against future aircraft technology requirements. Autonomous Systems is one of these Commodity Groups.
The NWAA work on Autonomous Systems is being led by Guy Horsley. Guy’s first task is to identify organisations that are either based in or may have the capability to contribute to the autonomous systems supply chain in the Northwest. He will then work with those organisation to identify key strengths and weaknesses and form the foundation for future potential opportunities to enable them to develop their capabilities to create a world-class autonomous systems supply chain capability.
