Square Kilometre Array Conference - An Industry perspective - 16th September - The Square Kilometre Array is an international project to design and build the next generation of radio telescope. With unmatched improvements in speed and sensitivity it will enable new discoveries and test some of the fundamental theories of cosmology. As complex as the LHC, over 3,000 Kms across and producing as much data as the whole of the internet of 2020 it represents a major challenge for scientists, engineers and manufacturers. With clear advantages for academics and scientists - What will industry gain from this project? This conference will bring together the designers, academics and users of the SKA with the companies that hope to benefit from the investment of 1.5 Billion Euros - benefits coming from either direct contracts or from the spin-out technologies that will developed. _connect with the Square Kilometre Array project. - The Square Kilometre Array is an international programme to build the next generation of radio telescopes. This project will drive advances in data communication and data analysis systems that are equally applicable to tomorrow's communications and data processing solutions. As complex as the LHC, over 3,000kms in physical size and with huge data processing capability - it is the "Man on the Moon" project for the electronics industry. The SKA SIG now has its own sub-group on the _connect website - go to https://ktn.innovateuk.org/web/ska . The _connect is now the main information platform for the Knowledge Transfer Networks and so the SKA information has been transferred to the new site and content has been extended - see the document library. A Guide to Off-shoring – Make or Buy for High Value Manufacturing?
What is the true “Landed Cost”?
Can the UK recover a sustainable manufacturing base for the future?

As the politicians now turn their heads back towards manufacturing as a cornerstone to realise exports and the UK’s economic recovery, this seminar evaluates the considerations to develop a successful global supply chain, particularly for the electronics sector, and how customers should evaluate the real economic landed cost when considering “make” or “buy”.

There is still a widespread perception that off-shoring is an easy way to cut costs. The reality is that it can be substantially different. Some companies that previously off-shored failed to consider the impact of the many factors involved.

Although overseas labour may be considered cheaper, other factors such as transport costs, exchange Rate fluctuations, speed of redesign and IP/counterfeiting concerns must also be taken into account.

When making a decision about off-shoring, there is a need for companies to make a valued, impartial judgement, based on the best Information available.

This event will cover pitfalls in off-shoring, failing to consider hidden costs, i.e. communication difficulties and varying work cultures.

We will also discuss the benefits of off-shoring. There will be cases where due to the nature of the product and certain aspects of the manufacture requirements, the risks of off-shoring could be minimised and cost savings could be possible.

Each delegate will also be given a complimentary copy of the “Guide to Off-shoring – the total cost of Manufacture”.
