SBRI - Small Business Research Initiative
SMEs and early stage businesses take note!

SBRI offers the potential to provide vital contract funding for the critical stage of product development.

The SBRI programme aims to use government procurement to drive innovation. It provides business opportunities for innovative companies whilst solving the needs of government departments.

Competitions for new technologies and ideas are run in specific areas and aim to engage a broad range of companies in short-term development contracts.

SBRI enables government departments and public sector organisations to procure new technologies faster and with managed risk through a phased development programme, and it provides paid contracts for the critical stage of product development.

PCB Solder Finish Common Cause of Failure – Poster Guide - Based on recent surveys, PCB solder finishes are one of the most common cause of soldering defects and rejection of PCBs during assembly. Design and Process Engineers highlighted solder finishes 35%, with delamination at 25%, third place were cosmetic faults. Another survey conducted as part of the NPL Defect Database creation, the survey showed that currently open joint failure is the most common issue seen by industry. Open joints are the most difficult to detect in manufacture. The root cause of these defects can be a simple process control issue or a more complex technical problem requiring laboratory analysis. PCB solder finish was seen as the second biggest issue and is understandable due to the number of different options and the need to change surface coatings for lead-free assembly. Many of the open defects could, however, have their root cause based on the finish By Bob Willis (03/08/10) ... more

RoHS recast - brief overview - The RoHS directive has been under review with extensive discussions between the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament. The Rapporteur of the European Parliament environment committee had proposed that all brominated and chlorinated flame retardants and PVC should be banned by RoHS.
